The Location:Consider an outdoor wedding at a favorite natural spot to add to the beauty of your celebration and to remind yourself why you make environmentally responsible choices every day. Also, have the ceremony and reception at the same location, to avoid having your guests drive between the two.The Dress Code:An avant-garde action would be buying a vintage dress and tuxedo from a resale clothing store or buying an organic silk/hemp wedding dress. You could consider choosing a simple dress and suit that you can wear again. And, donating your wedding dress for charity is also an option. The Invitations:You can now find in most markets, invitations printed on papers that actually have seeds embedded in them. Your guests can process these invitations to see flowers grow. Use a reply postcard (no envelope) and forgo the inner envelopes-you'll save paper and money.Food and Dishes:Find a caterer who is up to date and environmentally aware of a variety of ingredients and food that complement the green movement. As much as possible, buy local products. The Flowers and Centrepieces:Use potted plants instead of cut flowers for centerpieces. These can then be given as gifts and enjoyed for a longer period of time in their home. Find a wildflower or organic grower to create bouquets & table arrangements. Arrange for a donation of the flowers to a hospital in your city.Gifts:If you are still establishing a home, think about registering with an eco-conscious retailer to minimize receiving unnecessary trinkets from guests who aren't sure what you need. If you are already settled into a home, and do not need kitchenware or furnishings, you may recommend that guests donate to your favorite environmental group in honor of this special occasion.Rice Throwing Alternatives:Alternatives to rice throwing are birdseeds, native wildflower seeds, rose petals, or blowing homemade bubbles from recyclable containers.Programs:Have your order of service printed on 100% recycled PCW paper that has been processed without chlorine. And remember to collect the programs at the end of the ceremony and recycle them.Wedding Favors:Instead of favors, let your guests know that you have donated an amount per guest to your favorite environmental organization. More 'green' ideas : Lucky Bamboo, Seed Packet Wedding Favors, Handmade Paper with embedded wildflower seeds, Live Plants in Tubes, Tree Seedling Favors, Bulb wedding favors, Ecologic light bulbs.Honeymoon:Find a travel agent who can book you a socially and environmentally sensitive trip, including hotels that recycle and reduce the amount of unnecessary laundering, vegetarian, holistic and off the beaten path adventures and electric/hybrid car rentals. For more great ideas, visit our galleria resource centre at 4030 St. Ambroise, suite 107, Montreal or call us for a personal appointment at 514 487-3456. |
